The Wall Magazine has teamed up with F.I.C.A.R. (Formerly Incarcerated Citizens Against Recidivism) to create a forum for the families of the incarcerated to obtain legal services and consultation (Civil & Criminal) at a fraction of the price. As ‘Formerly Incarcerated Citizens,’ F.I.C.A.R. will also provide the families of the incarcerated with regular updates on upcoming bills that affect/effect our incarcerated loved ones and our communities so that they can be aware of changes a/effecting them one and how they as families of the incarcerated, can become pro-active (not reactive) in the struggle toward legislative, social, and prison reform.
It is important to remember, that only by being aware and proactive, can we begin to challenge the systems that have continued to disproportionately target Black & Brown (Black & Latino) people through practices of over policing, school-to-prison pipeline, illiteracy, and disparaging sentencing policies & procedures, resulting in mass incarceration.
F.I.C.A.R. was founded by Sheldon Preston Johnson who spent almost three decades incarcerated for non-homicidal offenses. Through advocacy and support, Sheldon (aka Superb), was resentenced from 70 years to time-served and released in 2023. While incarcerated, Sheldon obtained his certification as a paralegal, worked in over half a dozen Law Libraries, and at one point, was barred from working in NYS DOCCS law libraries for obtaining the release and resentencing of multiple Incarcerated individuals. Sheldon became a published author (www.prisonwriters.com), poet (www.prisonjournalismproject.org) and obtained his Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts from Cornell University through the Cornell Prison Education Program. Prior to his release, Sheldon continued to pursue his college education with the Hudson Link Higher Education program and is merely a dozen credits shy of his Bachelor’s of Science. While incarcerated Sheldon created a number of programs, mainly ‘The Dyslexia Screening-Identification and Intervention program’ and, ‘The Civic Engagement Curriculum of New York’. Sheldon is currently the Director of Legislative Priorities at the Guilty Project (www.guiltyproject.org) and works directly with the Center for Appellate Litigation in their YEARS (Youth Emergent .
